Thus, they may play a role in determining the extent to which social impressions are based primarily on relatively automatic, immediate reactions or instead are based on more controlled, analytic assessments Evidence consistent with these possibilities has emerged in many domains of social cognition, including the study of stereotyping For example, several studies suggest that happiness is associated with a tendency to think less extensively about the social environment Instead, happy people often appear content to rely on their generic knowledge about social groups rather than taking the trouble to engage in extensive individuation of particular group members (eg, Bodenhausen, Kramer, & S sser, 1994; Park & Banaji, 2000; for a review, see Bodenhausen, Mussweiler, Gabriel, & Moreno, 2001) Happiness may confer a sense of con dence in initial top-down impressions that makes effortful thought processes seem subjectively unnecessary.

The Tiles effect turns your image into tiles. In the Tiles Settings dialog box, shown in Figure 11-42, choose how many tiles you wish to see and offset the tiles by entering a percentage in the Tiles Offset field. In the Fill Empty Areas With field, choose the color you wish to appear between the tiles. Background and Foreground colors fill the space between the tiles with white; Inverse Image uses a negative version of the clip to fill the space; Unaltered Image simply uses the clip. Figure 11-43 shows a frame with the Tiles effect applied.

A COMPARISON OF MODEL-BASED AND DATA-BASED PROCEDURES The conventional wisdom regarding missing data procedures holds that the model-based procedures and data-based procedures, especially multiple imputation, are essentially equivalent in the quality with which they deal with missing data and differ only in the preferences researchers may have regarding the use of one or the other. However, recent evidence has shown that, although the conventional wisdom remains true in theory, there may be important differences in the quality of these two approaches as they are typically practiced (Collins et al., 2001). The main difference relates to the use of modelirrelevant variables. Model-based procedures for example, FIML procedures for SEM deal with the missing data and parameter estimation at the same time. Thus, by their very nature, these models tend to be limited to the variables that are deemed to be of substantive relevance. The idea of including substantively irrelevant variables into the model, although quite possible with many model-based procedures, is not typical. With multiple imputation, it is quite common, and also quite easy, to include substantively irrelevant variables into the model. Without understanding fully the reasons behind this, researchers have been adding such variables for some time under the belief that it is valuable to do so in order to help

re ecting this concept is illustrated in Figure 14.12. The service channel (SC) resides in the eighth subchannel. It carries the frame alignment signal (FAS), a bit-rate allocation signal (BAS), and an encryption control signal (ECS). We can regard an H0 , H11 , H12 channel as consisting of a number of 64 kbps time slots (TS). The lowest numbered time slot is structured exactly as just described for a 64-kbps channel, whereas the other time slots have no such structure. All channels have a frame structure in the case of multiple B and H0 channels; the initial channel controls most functions across the overall transmission, while the frame structure in the additional channels is used for synchronization, channel numbering, and related controls. The term I-channel is applied to the initial or only B-channel, to time slot one of the initial or only H0 channels, and to time slot one on H11 and H12 channels.
